about

MONKY MIND was born out of collaboration
between two musicians and two instruments coming from
two different cultures and repertoires, Karam (viola) from
Damascus and Jo (bass) from the south of France. Karam
learned Classical and Arabic music and Jo is a self-made
musician in the jazz and fusion universes.

Their music is a personal journey, calm, abnormal, sometimes
philosophical and intense, other times unusual and
paradoxical. These multiple characters emanate from the
mixing and fusion of different experiences and the desire to
create conceptual music.

SANCTUARY is Monky Mind’s first album. It illustrates musically
our sources of inspiration.

The first piece, SCARABS, is inspired
by an Egyptian heavenly symbol, god Khepri, who was
depicted as a beetle-headed man. Khepri makes the sun rise
every day before rolling it above the horizon and carrying it
through the other world after sunset, only to bring it back
again.

JUST A RAIN SONG is about a break-up between a woman and
a man who, poetically and spiritually, go back to each other
when the rain falls.

CHORDS FOR PEACE is a fragile idea of peace. Both simple
and complex, as this piece suggests with simple and calm
rhythms, and complex harmony. This piece features the great
Franck Wolf on Soprano Saxophone (www.franckwolf.com).

SARAH & FATYMA’S WALK is about two women survivors living
in two different contexts. Sarah, in New York with her two
sons, faces domestic violence. Fatyma is the nickname of a
Syrian woman who suffers with her three children from the
civil war in Aleppo after her husband was killed in an air raid.

The last piece NOVEMBER 22ND is a meditative work that
depicts some sort of a sonic homesickness while abroad,
where one finds himself/herself missing the familiar surrounding
sounds of his childhood. Kinan Azmeh wrote this piece while
abroad, inspired by the memory of sounds of the market
that used to exist behind his parents apartment back in
Damascus, and how the slow and steady rhythm of life keeps
moving regardless of one’s emotions.
This piece features the very talented Marimba player,
Clarissa Imperatore (clarissaimperatore.com).
